I assume by now you’ve all printed variations of your 2 ink poster and are now eagerly awaiting a new brief to get cracking into term two. Great. So this term we’re going to spend some time with type. Below you’ll find a list of typefaces that you’ll each be individually assigned. It is your job, in this first week, to learn as much as you can about your given typeface and present interesting and valuable information to the class on Tuesday 5 May. No doubt this information will include a brief history about the Type Designer, perhaps the state of cultural events that could have influenced the design of the type, printed examples of the type “in action”, critics views, and no doubt you’ll have your own take on it as well. I recommended you get hold of your typeface and print it big, spend some time with it, get to know it. You’ll need to be well versed in the correct language to use when discussing the various attributes of your typeface… bowl, stem, swash, bar etc… The presentations can take any form, whether it be printed handouts for everyone, or perhaps a slideshow projection. You’ll also need to watch Stephen Fry’s six-part doco on youtube (see link below). Great ok then. See ya next week.
