TINY PEOPLE

Tiny People - a tiny street art project
One of Slinkachu's street art works, check more of these cool little set ups and other projects like 'Inner City Snail - a slow moving street project', very cool

THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS

15 DAYS!
So not trying to scare you all but we've got 15days left until the end of the term and our final submission yeehaa!
And so, in preparation ella soph and I thought perhaps a meeting together to discuss where we're all going to put our work so we don't find ourselves in a similar situation to mid-year submission running around like headless chickens trying to find space. As good as a bookshelf looks ontop of a toilet, i think we can do better haha
So friday at 12 we're going to meet, i assume in the design room lounge area, i suggest we all bring treats
Let someone know if you cant come and maybe tell us your plans for where you want your work so we can all work together on it this time around

Op-Art: The Lost Summer

"So what did you manage to do this summer? Did you accomplish everything you set out to accomplish before Memorial Day? Clean your garage? Build a campfire? Paint a wall? Take in a ballgame? Sleep under the stars? If your summer wish list remains unfinished, despair not. You’re not alone. The notes you're about to view were gathered by Illegal Art, a collective of artists in New York, which used 6,000 Post-it notes to spell out the words “To Do” on windows and billboards across the city. Passers-by were then invited to write on the blank notes, to cover them with descriptions of tasks they hadn’t gotten around to this summer. A few of the collected notes are presented in their original handwriting — a catalog of unfinished business, just waiting for fall"

Melissa, this is similar to your piece on obsessions although post-its about things to do.

For anyone that's interested, The September Issue, a docu that looks behind the scenes of Vogue is showing at Rialto at the moment. I think it's pretty insightful movie and it's been getting quite good reviews.

Laura Ashley

Evening everyone. Not long ago I have been looking for ideas for the dinner and I became interested in the stuff of Laura Ashley. I find the brand quite traditional, delicate and there's something about the prints that I really like. But too much of it looks a little irritating. I think there could be a more modern version/designer of Laura. Perhaps more simple?

http://www.typeshed11.com

A website about a big type festival thing that was in Wellington this year. I read a bit about the workshops and stuff they did to educate and just get more people excited about type. Sounds like something fun to do and maybe they'll do it again? It looks quite educational and it would've been quite cool to go to an event for typography...

Air NZ Fashion Week

Hey guys. Hope the design studio has been productive this week. I know I've been doing a lot of design. kinda. not really, just been thinking about stuff.

Anyway here's the lowdown on what is happening at fashion week so far. I'm volunteering as an usher and there's about 12 of us and we're rostered throughout the week. The tent we're in seats about 800 and 200 standing. We just help set everyone and prior to show we also do seating plans and put out goody bags. We get to watched the show with everyone, so has anyone's seen any of the shows on TV?

it's been pretty cool to see some catwalk stuff. I've enjoyed being backstage, working with everyone and just seeing everything come together. We help the backstage set up and sometimes it takes a couple of hours. We do lot of standing around too. So I'm quite enjoying seeing all the planning and work that goes behind it. I haven't seen the dressing room.

So that's all for now. Hope everyone has a good week!

oh does anyone knows any galleries or any cools places in auckland? I'm planning to go the city gallery tomorrow other than that I'm quite overwhelm by everything else. and I don't have much time to google cos the wireless isn't working on my laptop so I have to use my friends.

Pig 05049

For all the animal conscious people out there....

The pork chops sit in the refrigerated case in the supermarket, snuggled on their white Styrofoam trays, glistening under taut clear plastic. We know (though we try not to think about it) that those chops, along with the bacon and ham on display nearby, originated with hogs that were slaughtered. But when Dutch designer Christien Meindertsma traced what happened to the body parts of a specific commercially raised pig, she discovered a lot more than packaged meat. That single animal, Meindertsma found, contributed to a mind-boggling number of products — 185 items in all, from chewing gum to bone china. The book Meindertsma created to impart her findings, Pig 05049, won a 2009 Index award in the Playful Learning category — the first time the Danish nonprofit organization has singled out a communication design for one of its coveted prizes.... Bee Factory

Challie Shell - Times photographer

Waiting: Obama listens from a back stairwell as he is introduced in Muscatine, Iowa. It was his second or third speech of the day. Unlike many of the politicians I have photographed in the past, I find it is easy to get a photograph of Obama alone. He lets his staff do their jobs and not fuss over him. Nov. 7, 2007

Some really great photos on Challie Shell's site

Michael Paul Young

Sophie you mite find this video interesting in terms of your work.

Ive just spent most of the day reading this book instead of doing work..
Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures:
"Set in the world's most hostile war zones, this is the powerful and utterly unforgettable memoir of three UN workers' struggle to make a difference."
It sounded to me a bit like one of those books that you feel that you should read so force your way through. But its actually really interesting and hard to put down. It's also pretty relevant to some of the talks we've had in class. I'm half way through it at the moment but I should be finished soon if anyone wants to borrow.

This is a must

I want everyone to listen to this.
Here is the first little bit. But its a bit too long to put the whole thing on...

When yer head gets twisted and yer mind grows numb
When you think you're too old, too young, too smart or too dumb
When yer laggin' behind an' losin' yer pace
In a slow-motion crawl of life's busy race
No matter what yer doing if you start givin' up
If the wine don't come to the top of yer cup
If the wind's got you sideways with with one hand holdin' on
And the other starts slipping and the feeling is gone
And yer train engine fire needs a new spark to catch it
And the wood's easy findin' but yer lazy to fetch it
And yer sidewalk starts curlin' and the street gets too long
And you start walkin' backwards though you know its wrong
And lonesome comes up as down goes the day
And tomorrow's mornin' seems so far away
And you feel the reins from yer pony are slippin'
And yer rope is a-slidin' 'cause yer hands are a-drippin'
And yer sun-decked desert and evergreen valleys
Turn to broken down slums and trash-can alleys

Rant

Ok todays daily rant will be on the whole student issue which everyone seems to be angry about at the moment. I was reading an article in the paper recently about how us students are really shit at saving our money and have no sense of the size of our student loans. It then went on to tell us that our generation is going to ruin the economy when we become parts of society (whatever that means). Because we will have massive student loans and will be irresponsibly swindling away our money instead of paying them off.

Two things pissed me off about this article. The first one being that these people somehow expect us to work and earn enough money to pay for our living expenses and our student loan and on top of that finish our degrees with good marks. Then they go on to make these unfounded assumptions about what we are going to do with our money when we graduate. Thinking were all going to go nuts and buy gold plated toilets or something.

Secondly the title read something like "varsity students in huge debt."
It's called university now not varsity! Varsity was back in the day when you didn't have to pay for their education. Varsity is where this journalist evidently went and got their free education. They could therefore save their well earned money to there hearts content and were therefore valuable amazing contributors to society. I don't really have a problem with paying for uni I don't thing the country has the money to pay for everyone to attend uni, but it just really irritates me when we get unfairly judged for having debt. Imagine what would happen if we all decided not to go to uni until we had saved for 10 years so we could pay for uni without getting a loan. The country would get messed up. We would have such massive shortages of trained people across all sectors that nothing could function. Anyway I will leave you with this very funny youtube clip from Chaser's War On Everything

Hey guys I'm on the blog this week. Sorry that I haven't edited yet, I've had a little trouble finding Aaron to do the whole admin thing. I will do heaps of posts to make up for it.

A friend sent me this link to an excerpt of a film about the subconscious art of grafitti removal. It's all about how the dull task of removing graffiti from public property has become the next step in the progression of modern art and even goes as far as classifying the different patchworks of paint, suggesting that aesthetically, this practice is similar to abstract expressionism, minimalism and Russian constructivism...but the people doing it are usually completely unaware that they're creating a new art form. It's really interesting! http://vimeo.com/368367

And on that note, the World Of Wearable Arts show is happening in Wellington on the 24th of this month.

This is the winning costume for the 2006 Awards Show, named ‘The Love of Icarus’ by Rodney Leong. It's made from 20 664 plastic collar stays and was inspired by the character from greek mythology and the quote “On certain night, when there is a full moon and the stars lay cast out, a shadowy figure can be seen floating within the moon.”

Here are some cool examples of fashion design thats aren't just the typical runway type stuff. I love recycled art, and the ways that junk can be used to create something original and funky. It's always interesting to see how people work within the constraints of an object and see beyond its original purpose.
